5 Types of Mattresses Available Today

Posted on

If you wake up in the morning with lower back pain that takes some minutes of stretching to get rid of, you are definitely sleeping on the wrong mattress. A good mattress should feel like you are floating on air without any pressure at all. It is time to get the right mattress. When you go to the mattress store, do not be afraid to lie down on the mattress for a few minutes in the position that you normally sleep in to test it out. The following are some of the options available in the market.

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring mattresses use a steel-coil support system rather than a sponge or cushion material. There are a variety of spring systems, some connected to a single unit while others are individually wrapped in pocketed coils. The spring shapes and designs also vary from one mattress to another. The spring system is usually covered by padding and upholstery materials such as foam or fiber. An innerspring mattress with more coils has more points of support and distribution, and this allows the mattress to contour better to the sleeper.

Waterbed

You can also opt for a waterbed, which is simply water enclosed in a water chamber and covered in padding to look like a conventional bed. Waterbeds are available in free flow and waveless options. In free-flow waterbeds, the water is allowed to flow without any restriction while the waveless waterbed does not allow as much movement. A hard-sided waterbed is enclosed in a steel frame while a soft-sided waterbed is enclosed in a rigid foam frame.

Foam Mattress

Foam mattresses are quite popular and use various types of foam as the support system. Some of the foam types used include polyurethane foam, memory or visco elastic foam and latex foam, among others. The foam mattresses are manufactured to various shapes, densities and comfort features.

Gel Mattress

These types of mattresses consist of a gel, which provides the support system enclosed in a type of foam and covered in upholstery layers. Gel foam offers varied levels of comfort and heat-dissipation features.

Air Bed

Finally, the airbed has an adjustable air chamber that offers the support system. Airbeds used for residential purposes are much different from the ones used for camping. The air chamber is covered in padding or upholstery materials and set atop a platform. One of the features of airbeds is the ability to adjust the firmness for individual sleeping needs.
